Since 2002 I have
been administrating a website (www.kittyspit.net/
mp3) that compiles links to sites hosting mp3s I have enjoyed.
This requires a biannual chore of checking and repairing links, which
must number in the hundreds by now. As I remove dead links, there comes
the occasional deletion that really pains me, like scooping out a particularly
beautiful fish taken to floating sideways in the aquarium. I created this
compilation of some music that I have missed since its host sites either
removed the files, or vanished.
Any and all of these tracks may be floating around P2P systems, but this
disc may be more convenient for folks on modem speed.

Sound System:
1. Muy Fumao #2
The Force Inc. electronic music label used to host a rotating mp3 magazine
on its site, and this track was my favorite download. I kept an eye out
for the BSS, but I haven't been able to locate it/them on the Web.
Victor
Jara:
2. Che Guevara
3. Cancion del Minero
4. El Aparecido
5. Siete Estados Intro
The NuevaCancion site showcased Chilean revolutionary folksinger Victor
Jara, who was assassinated during the military coup in 1973. The site
featured some rare recordings and television pieces.
The
Coughlan Sisters:
6. Farewell My Own Heart
An MP3.com page presented a few home recordings of three sisters singing
Medieval-style rounds. The story was that the recordings were found in
an attic and left behind by the prior owners: a family that died in a
car crash (in 50's, I think). The neighbors that identified the recordings
apparently had no idea that the sisters had studied singing.
The
Turkish Ministry of Culture site once hosted one of the most amazing mp3
resources, featuring tons of old Turk/Anatolian music, and sadly wiped
it clean.
7. Agir Zeybek
8. Ela Gozunu Sevdigim
9. Tulumite Destami
These were the mp3 filenames, I don't know the names of artists or if
these are the true titles.
The
website for the Alive/Total Energy/Disaster label cluster used to host
a great wealth of punk, rock and blues mp3s. Here are two of my favorite
catches:
10. MC5 - I Just Don't Know (from '66)
11. Richmond Sluts - City Girls
Tienerkoor
"Jacob Harmel":
12. La la la
A Dutch children's choir from the Herman Broekhuizen radio school, occasionally
convering pop hits from the 60's and 70's. The music used to be archived
on Splogman's World.
Pontian
Society of Chicago Xeniteas:
13. Ashn Togian Erconme
14. Kotsiari
15. O Gerors
16. Paharomanas
These tracks appeared on the Pontian organization's site, but I don't
know if it was their own music/dance group, or simply samples of music
from elsewhere. But the tracks do occasionally feature a children's choir.
Pontians, btw, are the ethnic Greeks of Turkey.
Timothy
Renner, musician and founder of the Hand/Eye and Dark Holler labels, has
been at the helm of the latest strains of wyrdfolk and neo-appalachian.
His site rescinded its downloads a couple of years back.
17. Stone Breath - Through the Trees
18. Spectral Light and Moonshine Firefly Snakeoil Jamboree - A Conversation
with Death
A
website showcasing Circassian culture (from the region between the Black
and Caspian seas) compiled music from numerous sources.Kafkas
muzikleri: Tracks 19-21
Haqqani
Sufi Order:
22. Mystical Chanting of Chechnya (Chechnyan war chant)
An MP3.com page for the Haqqani Sufi Order included this 16 minute chant
among its many sermons. The in-the-red production and echo-reverb really
transform it into something bombastic. |
